HISTORY OF THE MOJITO

Let’s rewind for a second. It’s a hot afternoon in 19th-century Havana, Cuba. Sugar cane farmers are baking under the Caribbean sun, looking for a way to cool off. What do they have? Rum (a byproduct of sugar cane), cooling mint, zesty lime, and maybe a bit of sugar. Mix it all together — and you’ve got the earliest version of the mojito.

Over time, the mojito evolved from a humble laborer’s refreshment into a globally loved cocktail, served in elegant bars and beach resorts alike. Even Ernest Hemingway got in on the action: “My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita.”

So what’s made the mojito such a classic? It’s simple, fresh, incredibly drinkable — and now, thanks to this freezer door method, even easier to enjoy.

WHAT IS A FREEZER DOOR MOJITO?

A Freezer Door Mojito is exactly what it sounds like: a big-batch mojito you prep in a bottle and store in the fridge (or even the freezer if you adjust the ratio). It’s cold, flavorful, and ready when you are — no squeezing limes or muddling mint for each drink.

It’s part of a growing trend of freezer door cocktails, where you batch your favorite recipes in advance and keep them chilled for quick, effortless pours.

WHICH RUM TO USE

When it comes to Mojitos, white rum is the go-to. It's light, clean, and lets the mint and lime shine through. I typically reach for something smooth but affordable like Bacardi Superior or Plantation 3 Stars. If you want a slightly richer flavor, you can even experiment with a white rum that has subtle tropical or vanilla notes — just make sure it's not spiced or too bold, or it might overpower the drink. The goal here is crisp, refreshing, and easy to sip.

FAQ

Can I use bottled lime juice?
Fresh lime juice is best. Bottled can work in a pinch, but it won’t give you the same brightness.

What kind of rum is best?
Stick with a clean, white rum like Bacardi or Havana Club. You want something light and smooth that doesn’t overpower the mint and lime.

Can I freeze the bottle?
You can, but lower the rum slightly or add a splash of water to avoid freezing solid. A very cold fridge is usually perfect.

Do I still need to top with soda water?
Yes — it adds that essential mojito fizz and keeps the drink light and crisp.
